When it makes sense to rent excavators, mixers, and scaffolding — and when to buy. Cost comparison for Cambodian sites.
Renting vs Buying Construction Equipment in Cambodia
Should you own a mini excavator or rent one when needed? For most contractors in Cambodia, the answer depends on utilisation.
The rule of thumb
If you will use the machine more than 60% of the year, buying usually wins. Below that, renting is cheaper once you count fuel, spare parts, and idle time.
Sample cost comparison — 3-tonne excavator
| Item | Rent (per day) | Own |
|---|---|---|
| Day rate | USD 90 | — |
| Purchase price | — | USD 22,000 |
| Fuel | included | USD 25 / day |
| Operator | USD 20 | USD 20 |
| Maintenance | included | USD 3,000 / year |
| Resale after 5 years | — | ~USD 10,000 |
For fewer than ~150 days a year, renting is cheaper. Over that, ownership pays back within 3–4 years.
What to rent, what to buy
Usually rent:
- Tower cranes, boom lifts, piling rigs
- Long scaffolding jobs
- Concrete pumps
Usually buy (if you are a contractor):
- Small mixers, vibrators, grinders
- Basic scaffolding for repeat use
- Tools under USD 500
