What Cambodian builders should know about rebar grades, common sizes, current prices, and how to spot low-quality steel on site.

Steel Rebar Guide for Cambodia: Grades, Sizes & Prices

Reinforcement steel — or rebar — is one of the biggest line items in any Cambodian construction budget. Choosing the wrong grade or accepting under-sized bars can weaken columns and slabs for the life of the building.

Common rebar grades in Cambodia

Most sites in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap use two grades:

  • SD40 (Grade 40) — yield strength around 400 MPa. Suitable for small villas and boundary walls.
  • SD50 (Grade 50) — yield strength around 500 MPa. Standard for multi-storey houses, shophouses, and commercial buildings.

Always ask the supplier for the mill test certificate. Reputable stores such as those listed on BuildHub will provide it without hesitation.

Standard bar sizes

DiameterTypical use
6 mmStirrups, ties
10 mmSlab mesh, small beams
12 mmBeam main bars, columns for 1-storey
16 mmColumns for 2–3 storey houses
20–25 mmMain columns of shophouses and villas

How to spot low-quality rebar

  1. Check the rolled brand mark — genuine bars carry the mill logo every metre.
  2. Weigh a 1 m sample — a 12 mm bar should weigh close to 0.888 kg/m.
  3. Reject bars with heavy rust flakes or bent ends.

Getting the best price

Rebar prices in Cambodia move with global steel and USD/KHR rates. Compare quotes from at least three suppliers on BuildHub before ordering a full truck. Bulk orders above 5 tonnes usually get 3–6% off.
